Country Gains: Rock ‘n’ roll is still America’s favorite music, but country is closing the gap, selling twice as many recordings last year as it did in 1990, according to the Recording Industry Assn. of America. In the group’s latest survey, country music accounted for 16.5% of all sales in 1992, up from 12.5% a year earlier and 8.8% in 1990. Rock’s share declined 3% between 1991 and 1992, but it remains the sales leader with 33%. In other music categories, urban contemporary, which includes rap, had 16.7% of the marketplace, down almost 2% from 1991. Pop accounted for 11.4% of the sales.
