Opera Challenge: The Long Beach Opera Assn. has been awarded a $350,000 challenge grant from the Burbank-based Ledler Foundation. To collect the grant’s first $100,000, the opera must eliminate its $300,000 accumulated debt before June 30. After that, the opera will receive $50,000 in each year (for five years) in which it raises $150,000 in matching gifts from other foundations. In immediate response to the challenge grant, the opera has already raised $150,000 toward eliminating the debt.
