Street Extension Plan to Be Opposed

Homeowners today plan to oppose the extension of a street into Sepulveda Boulevard and to try to impose conditions on a developer’s plan to build a condominium on land they say has been plagued with crime.

Don Schultz, president of the Van Nuys Homeowners Assn., said Monday that his group will appear before the city’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee to oppose the extension of Hamlin Street into Sepulveda Boulevard.

The proposal, Schultz said, could allow crime from the boulevard to spill over into a quiet neighborhood, and could lead to commercial use of the street because it is bordered by a motel and shopping center.

In a separate matter, Schultz’s group has asked the Board of Zoning Appeals to put conditions on a developer’s plan for property at 15057-15061 Burbank Blvd.

The owner will ask the board today for permission to build a 12-unit condominium project on the lot. But Schultz said the existing property is a haven for drug pushers and prostitutes.

Cindy Miscikowski, chief deputy to City Councilman Marvin Braude, said she will join with Schultz to request that any approval of the proposed condominium include a requirement to quickly demolish the existing vacant buildings on the site.

The owner, Jatinder Singh Bawa, could not be reached for comment.
