FULLERTON : Council to Discuss Senior Housing Plan

Share

The City Council tonight will discuss a $4.8-million housing project for senior citizens on East Amerige Avenue.

The developers are applying for federal tax credits because the project would benefit low-income senior citizens, according to Redevelopment Agency Director Gary Chalupsky.

If the developer, Amerige Manor Apartments, receives tax credits, the Redevelopment Agency would give $1.8 million to the project. The project would then have 22 units available for rent at $368 a month. Thirty-six apartments, excluding the manager’s apartment, would be available for $474 a month.

If the developer is unable to get tax credits, the agency would contribute $885,000. Without federal tax credits, 10 apartments would be available for $360, 20 for $474, and 28 for $555, according to city officials.

Redevelopment money is controlled by the council but cannot be used for general city projects. It is taken from property taxes and must be spent in defined redevelopment areas. The city is required to spend some of the money on affordable housing.

The apartments would be built at 221-233 East Amerige Ave.

In other business, the council will receive a five-year plan for capital improvements. The plan covers housing, land-use, maintenance and building projects the city expects to undertake.

Copies of the plan are available at the city’s libraries and the city clerk’s office. The council will hold a public hearing to discuss the plan on April 27.

The council also is set to create an Adopt-a-Neighborhood program to organize residents to help fight graffiti. The Police Department has also asked for approval to spend $10,000 on graffiti surveillance equipment.
