Countywide : Applicants Sought for Rental Lottery

Share

Applications are available for low-income elderly or disabled people interested in living at a new, federally subsidized complex of 74 one-bedroom apartments in Simi Valley.

The Commission on Human Concerns is distributing rental applications at its Oxnard office for a lottery that will be held June 7, said Genny Sonnenberg, an administrative secretary for the Oxnard-based nonprofit agency.

Applicants do not have to be Ventura County residents, said Dulce Conde-Sierra, deputy director of housing and special projects for Simi Valley.

But to qualify for the lottery drawing, applicants must be disabled or at least 62 years old with an annual income not greater than $16,950 for one person or $19,350 for a couple, Conde-Sierra said.

Tenants selected for the apartments will pay rent equal to 30% of their monthly income, she said.

Now under construction, the apartment project--called Heywood Gardens--is expected to be open by July or August, Conde-Sierra said.

The complex is in the 1700 block of Heywood Street, near Erringer Street and Los Angeles Avenue.

The apartments will be managed by the Atlanta-based Christian Senior Housing Foundation, which built the $6.4-million project with a loan from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and a grant from the Simi Valley Community Redevelopment Agency.

Applications may be picked up at the Commission on Human Concerns at 621 Richmond Ave., Oxnard.
