LETTERS IN VIEW : Fate of Our Children and Their Education Is Uncertain

Re “The World of Fear” (March 18): After the recent incidents at Fairfax and Reseda high schools, my 13-year-old daughter is afraid of going to school. On her way out the door the other morning, she stopped and asked me, “Am I going to be shot at today?” I hesitantly reassured her that she would be OK. She came home that day and told me that the schools now have scanners and are randomly checking backpacks for weapons.

The sadness I share with so many parents for the children of Los Angeles is immeasurable. The pain and guilt I feel for having my child live in constant fear for her life is unbearable. In a world that can accomplish so much, it’s hard to believe there are no solutions or caring leaders in the community willing to find the courage.

The fate of our children and their education is one of doubt, fear and uncertainty, when it should be one of hope, aspiration and endless possibilities.
