PLATFORM : Use Talk, Not Dogs

MARSHA BURGER, a Yorba Linda mother of two high school-aged children, commented on a Huntington Beach school district proposal to use drug-sniffing dogs. She told The Times:

The thought that a school district may have drug-sniffing dogs smelling around student lockers repulses me.

I have had many talks with my children on drugs and the many other issues they face. And while I don’t use drugs today, I have been honest with my children and have “fessed” up to my past experiences with drugs.

As they listen to my stories, they appreciate that the use of drugs then, compared to now, are not the same. I hope that my honesty makes them realize that their mother is not perfect, and like them, has made decisions that might have been wrong.

I realize that my kids are not the same as their friends, whose parents never discuss such subjects. But dialogue is the only way to address the problems that we all face.

I certainly don’t pretend to have the answers. But I do know that my kids have no intention of trying drugs, and I didn’t have to use a dog to scare them.
