The City Council approved a resolution this week supporting the nomination of Newport Beach state Sen. Marian Bergeson to the office of state superintendent of public instruction.
City Councilman Mark Leyes, who proposed the resolution, said that Bergeson always tries to to do the right thing and has “a compelling interest in education.”
Leyes also said that Bergeson will be an asset to the city in that she represents a portion of Garden Grove and is familiar with its problems.
Councilman Robert F. Dinsen cast the only vote against the resolution, saying Bergeson “always went along with taking money away from cities to balance the state budget.”
Leyes said the resolution will be forwarded to the Orange County delegation.
