SAN FERNANDO : Restriction Urged for New Churches

Share

The San Fernando Planning Commission has recommended a change in the city’s zoning to ban new religious institutions, such as churches, from moving into storefronts or commercial buildings in the city’s business districts.

After holding a hearing this week, the commission voted to back the zoning amendment in an effort to keep commercial areas open for tax-revenue producing businesses. Two people spoke in favor of the measure and none spoke against it.

The measure will not affect nine existing churches in commercial areas, which will be allowed to rebuild and expand, city officials said. The council will vote on the commission’s recommendation in May.
