SANTA ANA : Youngsters Aiming for a Good Time
These days kids are more likely to stop by their corner store for a few rounds of the video game “Streetfighter.”
But two fourth-grade buddies opted for the old-fashioned game of marbles on a recent spring day.
Nine-year-olds Jesus Sam and Gabriel Jasso interrupted their walk home from Fairhaven Elementary School for a “shootout” at a bus stop on Bristol Street in Santa Ana.
It was a quintessential childhood game that required but a few square feet of hard dirt, a few shiny marbles, and a wee bit of manual dexterity. And best of all, it didn’t demand an endless supply of quarters that video games do.
With an eye locked on target, Jesus launched one of his “cat’s-eye” marbles across the dirt.
Gabriel then launched his own shot, which added another marble to his collection.
“I have a hundred marbles at home,” Gabriel bragged.
