STILL WAITING: Orange County does better than its neighbors in making deadbeat dads pay up. But Children Now, a national children’s rights agency, says that while the county’s 51% is well above the state average, the county has got a lot of work left. Officials say the overworked system hasn’t caught up with all those who owe. Says Children Now’s Deborah Ellwood: “Children simply can’t wait. We’re seeing the results of society neglecting the rights of children.”

Deadbeat Dads Only half of Orange County’s children received child support due to them last year. This was higher than the 44% state average and the rate in nearby counties. Orange: 51% San Bernardino: 49% San Diego: 46% Riverside: 42% Los Angeles: 40%
