EAST LOS ANGELES : Asian-Americans Examine Riot Effects
Representatives of Asian-American communities will speak on how ethnic groups are dealing with the aftermath of last spring’s riots at the fifth annual Asian Pacific American Community Research Roundtable on Friday at Cal State Los Angeles.
The meeting brings members of the Asian Pacific American community together to discuss issues and identify possible research topics. The daylong conference aims to connect college students with service agencies, opening doors to internships, volunteer and research efforts and other ways students can give something back to their communities, said George Umezawa, one of the organizers.
This year’s conference will try to emphasize the fact that while the plight of the Korean-American riot victims was well-publicized and significant, all Asian-Americans were affected, Umezawa said. Speakers include those from the Cambodian, Thai and Filipino areas as well as the Japanese, Chinese and Korean communities.
Another key part of the conference will be the presentation of findings of a yearlong UCLA graduate-student study on housing, employment and small-business development in the Asian-American community.
The 9 a.m.-to-5 p.m. conference costs $5 for students and $10 for others.
