First-term Councilwoman Mary Manning is the city’s new mayor.

The council this week also chose Councilman Harry Budds to be mayor pro tem. A mayor is selected from among the council members each year.

Manning, elected in 1990, said she would emphasize the creation of a city plan to revitalize downtown, continue partnership with the school district and provide alternatives to gangs for at-risk youngsters.

“In a year, I’d like to be able to say we live in a safer and cleaner place,” she said.

Manning, 43, a full-time council member and a parent, is an active PTA member and is on the school district’s gang task force.

She has been active in the Girl Scouts, leading a campaign to save the local Scouting building.

She has been married for 23 years and has two children, a daughter who attends Temple City High School and a son at Clovely Elementary School.

She said she wants to encourage more senior citizens to volunteer to help in local schools and get more children involved in youth organizations.

“Kids don’t have to hang out on the street corners. There are places they can go,” she said.
