Youth Camps

Thank you very much for your editorial “Youth Camps: The Unwisest Cut” (March 27). Our office agrees that everyone must work together to keep the camps open. We are doing our best to cooperate in that effort because the Los Angeles County Office of Education operates the schools at the camps. Not only do the camp youths “learn discipline and job skills” but they also make significant gains in their high school education. Rehabilitation and a high school diploma are two achievements jeopardized by the potential closing of the camps. Challenges to public safety, a grossly overcrowded CYA and more young people without job skills and diplomas will be the results.
