SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The old bumper sticker saw that people should “think globally, but act locally,” would make a perfect slogan for Saturday’s Let’s Make a Difference Environmental Faire at Peralta Canyon Park.

Included in the third annual program will be a planting of 37 trees, the distribution of 1,000 seedlings, and exhibits by nonprofit groups and businesses involved in environmental issues. There will also be entertainment and a wildlife art exhibit.

About 5,000 people are expected to attend the event in the park at 115 N. Pinney Drive.

“This is a celebration that will coincide with Earth Day, and it is very important that people realize that every little thing they do to help the environment locally can have an effect overall,” said Cathy Glasgow, a city recreation supervisor and one of the event’s organizers.

The tree planting effort begins at 9 a.m. The exhibits are open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Actress Valerie Harper will be present.

Entertainment will be provided by a steel drum band. For children, there will be storytellers and an anti-pollution rap group called the “Drip Dudes.”

The exhibitors will include such nonprofit groups as the Girl Scouts, the Sierra Club and the National Audubon Society, as well as businesses selling such items as home solar energy systems, products made from recycled materials and composting bins.

“We hope to expose people to many exhibitors that they normally would not get a chance to meet, offering services that help the environment,” Glasgow said.
