LAGUNA NIGUEL : Program on Air Base Traffic Scheduled

Share

Residents with questions or concerns about air traffic from the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station are invited to attend a presentation on the issue next month, Mayor Thomas W. Wilson said.

Wilson said he organized the seminar in response to a steady stream of letters and phone calls he has received through the years.

“There are a lot of questions people have, like: ‘Why do they fly so low? Why are they so loud? Why don’t I know when they’re going to fly overhead? Why can’t they use a different approach?’ ” Wilson said. “This is an opportunity for people to get those questions answered directly.”

Besides the base’s impact on Laguna Niguel, community liaison officer Col. Leonard Fuchs will discuss the air station’s operation and purpose, land-use compatibility and routing of air traffic throughout the Southland.

Fuchs will also probably answer questions about changes to be expected if a commercial airport took over El Toro’s 4,700-acre site, Wilson said.

A commercial airport is one options discussed for the site should the air station be shut down. The 50-year-old base is among the military installations scheduled for closing in an effort to trim the nation’s defense budget.

The presentation will be held May 12 at 7 p.m. in the conference room at Design Center South, 23811 Aliso Creek Road, Laguna Niguel.
