Digital Equipment Corp. said its third-quarter loss narrowed to one-tenth its size a year ago as the company continues to cut costs.

The nation’s No. 2 computer company lost $30.1 million, or 23 cents a share, for the third fiscal quarter, compared to a loss of $311.3 million, or $2.50, at the same time a year ago.

Revenue for the quarter ended March 27 rose 6% to $3.45 billion from $3.25 billion, mostly because of favorable foreign currency exchange rates, the company said.
