Graffiti: Playing the Urban Game of Tag

Your article “Urban Scrawl” (April 4) pleased me a great deal to know that the community, as a whole, is doing something about graffiti. Yet it is disappointing to see all the hard work go to waste when newly painted walls are vandalized again.

Instead of continuing to use money for repainting, shouldn’t we get to the bottom of the problem? Shouldn’t we teach them that graffiti is not a thing to do? I feel that there are too many people, including myself, who send taggers the wrong messages when we get let them do their things, even when we catch them in the act.

People tag in broad daylight because they don’t care who sees them. Everyone could try to discourage taggers by setting their minds straight, by reporting them to the authorities so that they are the ones who pay for their acts.
