Los Angeles Mayor’s Race

Share

Because my last name identifies my Jewish heritage, I have received three letters from a Jewish mayoral candidate. One implored me to ask myself “What’s best for the Jews?” when I visit the polls.

In the advertisements and interviews for the other major candidates for mayor, I see a rich Republican talking about what he will do for big business, while a Democrat claims he supports “the workingman.” A black man touts support from black leaders, and a woman talks about how much she has done to advance women’s issues.

Why is it, in this time where Los Angeles most needs to come together, that the people who want to lead us are trying so hard to emphasize our cultural and social differences?
