GOLF ROUNDUP : Wargo Joins the Club With Playoff Victory

Club pro Tom Wargo stared down Bruce Crampton in a sudden-death playoff victory Sunday in the PGA Seniors Championship at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

One of the most popular senior triumphs in years came to an end when Crampton put his tee shot into the water on the par-three 17th hole at the PGA National Golf Club.

Wargo, 50, whose resume includes jobs as a steel worker, dairy farmer and assembly-line worker, won his first official senior tour title with a two-putt par against Crampton’s double bogey on the second extra hole.

His victory secured, worth $110,000, tears came to his eyes in an embrace with his wife, Eileen, an indication of how much more than money it meant to the club pro from Centralia, Ill..

“It was one big moment,” Wargo said. “How can you capture it? You can’t bottle it. It hasn’t sunk in yet.”

Holding a three-shot lead with three holes to play, Wargo lost the edge and fell back into a tie at 275, 13 under par, after a 70. Crampton, the Australian veteran of more than 1,000 pro tournaments, completed a 66 with birdies on the last two holes.

On the first extra hole, Wargo got up and down from a bunker.

Crampton then pushed his six-iron tee shot into the water on the 152-yard 17th.

David Edwards celebrated his 37th birthday by shooting a two-under-par 69 to win the Heritage Classic at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Edwards won $202,500 for the fourth victory of his career, by two strokes over David Frost at the Harbour Town Golf Links. He finished at 273, 11 under par.

Edwards made birdies on the ninth, 10th and 11th holes to take control. Frost, who shot a 71, made a double-bogey on the 12th and a bogey on the 14th.

Paul Azinger (73), Ian Baker-Finch (70), Mark McCumber (71), Don Pooley 70) and Fuzzy Zoeller (70) were next at 277.

Trish Johnson of Wales won her second consecutive LPGA event, shooting a two-under-par 70 to capture the Atlanta Women’s Championship by two shots over Sherri Steinhauer at Stockbridge, Ga.

Johnson, the 1987 European tour rookie of the year, finished with a six-under-par 282 total for four trips around the hilly, 6,209-yard Eagle’s Landing Country Club course. Steinhauer finished with a 71 for 284.
