Not Political Posturing

Share

In a March 17 letter, “State Killing Education,” Elane O’Rourke states a number of issues which are factually in error:

Jason Henderson, the student representative to the governing board and a Moorpark College student, has never been denied materials or information from our district. Also, he has been notified of all governing board meetings.

The board never voted to approve the proposed summer session class reductions at our colleges. These plans were promulgated by the college presidents and district office administrators. The board supports offering a normal summer program this year.

“The threat to make $800,000 in cuts smacks precisely of the bullying tactics and political posturing. . . .” Unfortunately, the California recession and a reduction in state property tax revenue are forcing retrenchment in all areas of government from cities to schools. It is not political posturing to guarantee a balanced budget, which, unlike the federal government, is required by law.
