A Chatsworth man convicted of raping two female acquaintances has been sentenced to 37 years in state prison, prosecutors said Tuesday.

After a five-day trial, a jury found Fred McCray guilty Monday of three charges of forcible rape stemming from two attacks.

Superior Court Judge Howard J. Schwab immediately sentenced McCray, 36, to the maximum term. Schwab handed down a 24-year sentence for the rape convictions and another 13 years because McCray had previously been convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and burglary. Deputy Dist. Atty. Patricia K. Doyle said McCray knew one victim from the church they attended, and the second victim was an employee at his janitorial services firm.

An 18-year-old woman was raped twice in McCray’s apartment Dec. 28, 1991, and a 21-year-old woman was victimized June 13, 1992, in her Van Nuys apartment, according to Doyle.

“He used physical force--he choked them, he hit them,” Doyle said.
