SAN FERNANDO : Home Composting Program Approved
- Share via
A home composting program aimed at discouraging residents from throwing away tree trimmings and organic food materials has been approved by the San Fernando City Council.
Gabrielle Sanchez, an administrative assistant in charge of recycling programs, said the city will allocate $7,500 to subsidize the cost of composting bins for residents who attend one of six composting workshops.
The first workshop will be held in mid-May.
She said the city buys the bins for $68 and sells them to residents for $25. The city also provides instructions on how to turn leaves, weeds, orange peels and coffee grounds into a soil additive similar to fertilizer.
The program will help the city meet state law requirements to reduce its solid waste by 25% by 1995, Sanchez said.
