After 30 years as a resident and with a role in virtually every community organization, Councilman Joseph C. Ciraulo is the city’s new mayor.

The City Council voted Tuesday to elect Ciraulo to the post and Councilman Dennis A. Lojeski as mayor pro tem.

Ciraulo, 57, was elected to the City Council in 1990 and will be up for election in November. He is president of a Monrovia-based medical services company that he owns with his wife, Carol.

Among other posts, he is a member of the city’s Personnel Commission, a trustee for Arcadia Methodist Hospital, a director on Arcadia’s Tournament of Roses Committee and past president of the city’s Chamber of Commerce.

Ciraulo is a UCLA graduate who rose to the rank of sergeant in the Army while serving in Germany.

As mayor, he said, he will continue the work started by Mayor George Fasching.

“There’s a lot of work to be done. The completion of Nordstrom (at Santa Anita Fashion Park), the rebuilding of a city fire station, the refurbishment of the main library and the downtown revitalization,” he said.

Beyond these goals, he said, he is concerned about the city’s budget.

Ciraulo vowed to continue the city’s fiscally conservative policies, which he says have left the city better off than others.

“We saved for a rainy day,” he said.
