Egypt Extends Detention of 3 American Citizens
Egypt has extended pretrial detention for three U.S. citizens and a New Zealander accused of exploiting religion to debase Islam and foment sectarian sedition, court officials said Wednesday.
They said a court has agreed to a public prosecutor’s request to hold the four Westerners, arrested in early March, for another 45 days.
The four have admitted to being committed Christians who engaged groups of Muslims in religious debate. Egypt’s 90% Muslim majority is forbidden by law to convert to Christianity or other religions.
