LOS ALAMITOS : Refurbished Park to Have New Name

Share

A refurbished South Highland Park will reopen on June 5 under a new name and with added facilities, according to Community Services Director Gail Silva.

The park will be renamed the Orville R. Lewis Memorial Park, in honor of Lewis, a former police commander, who died last year.

In addition to his work at the Police Department, Lewis was also active in youth and community affairs, including the Boy Scouts.

The park will feature new playground equipment and a redesigned play area. Dynacon General Contractors of Huntington Beach will install the $22,000 in playground equipment in May.

In addition, Silva said, a large concrete sign and a plaque will be erected to honor Lewis.

The park will also feature new barbecue stands, which were built by members of the Orville R. Lewis Memorial Committee.

Though the park was refurbished, it still lacks some services. There will be no restroom facilities, Silva said, and while new grass has been planted, the basketball court has not been resurfaced.

Baseball and softball games can be played, but there are no lights for night games, she said.
