Israel will allow about 30 Palestinian deportees to return home after years in exile as part of a package of concessions to the Palestinians, a senior Palestinian said Sunday.

The repatriation decision apparently is linked to an Arab decision to return to Middle East peace talks, scheduled to resume Tuesday in Washington.

Saeb Erakat, deputy leader of the Palestinian delegation to the talks, said the deportees will come from the first batch of Palestinians expelled from the occupied territories from 1967 to 1987 for anti-Israeli activity.

Erakat did not say how long the repatriation process would take.

The reported Israeli agreement to permit 30 Palestinians, all believed residing in Jordan, to return within 48 hours was apparently aimed at demonstrating the Jewish state’s willingness to make concessions to boost prospects for progress in the talks.
