VAN NUYS : Parents Learn How to Help With Education

School administrators at Cohasset Street School hosted an open house Tuesday to show off a center for parents aimed at encouraging them to educate themselves so they can, in turn, educate their children.
In operation since last fall, the center at the school in Van Nuys offers parents a variety of resources and services, including literacy classes, a lending library and weekly support group meetings.
“I think it’s crucial for parents to be involved in their children’s education,” said Principal Maria Villasenor during the center’s open house. “The parent center gives them a place where they can feel comfortable and where they can come to learn.”
About 30 parents checked out the center, which is located in two classrooms and filled with desks, educational videos, books and a computer. Open five days a week, it is one of 16 centers on school campuses scattered throughout the Valley.
Carmen Romo, a Van Nuys mother of two children, said the center provides parents an opportunity to see their children’s education firsthand since they can volunteer to work in the classrooms.
“This way you can see if your children are learning,” Romo said. “You also learn how you can help them by working with the teacher.”
