Nine members of the University of Iowa women’s rowing crew had to be rescued by their coach after their racing boat was mangled in an accident on the Iowa River.

Eight rowers and the coxswain, the person who directs the rowers, were practicing when the river’s current caught the 60-foot fiberglass shell, causing it to hit a bridge, turn sideways and break in two. The coach had been following in a motor boat.
