A La Canada Flintridge man died Sunday evening when his mountain bike sped off the side of a road in the Angeles National Forest and he fell more than 300 feet to rocks below.
Roger Dean Dahl, 29, a well-known and experienced mountain bike racer, was traveling downhill with a group of four other cyclists when the accident occurred about 7:30 p.m. near the top of Mt. Wilson, said Norm Batterson of the Altadena Search and Rescue Team.
The group had ridden by car to the top of Mt. Wilson and planned to cycle to the bottom via the Mt. Wilson Toll Road, a 12-foot-wide dirt road, Batterson said.
Dahl passed the other cyclists and, without warning, went off a steep cliff at a gentle turn in the road, Batterson said.
