Bruce Maines; Retired Chairman of Safeco

Bruce Maines, 66, chairman and retired president and chief executive officer of Safeco Corp. Maines, who had been chairman since 1989 and retired from the other positions in 1991, spent his career working for the Seattle-based property and casualty insurance group. Born in Tacoma, Wash., he earned bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Washington. He joined Safeco’s legal staff in 1949, beginning as a lawyer trying personal injury lawsuits and working his way up the executive ranks. Maines was a prominent civic leader, chairing such organizations as United for Washington, the Council for Corporate Responsibility, Leadership Tomorrow, the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and Washington Roundtable.
