Nobel Prize-winning physicist and author Henry W. Kendall will speak Wednesday in Camarillo about strategies for developing safe and sustainable alternative energy sources and reducing the risk of nuclear war.

The event, sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Ventura County and other groups and businesses, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Bill Esty Community Center, 3701 E. Las Posas Road.

The cost, including cocktails and a light buffet served at 5:15 p.m., is $12 per person.

A professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Kendall won the Nobel Prize in 1990 for his contribution to proving the existence of subatomic particles called quarks. But he is probably best known for his outspoken criticism of certain U. S. energy and defense policies.

As chairman of the Union of Concerned Scientists, based in Cambridge, Mass., Kendall has been at the forefront of that organization’s attack on what it considers threatening scientific ventures ranging from nuclear power plants to the “Star Wars” defense system.

Kendall has also written or co-authored many studies and books on energy and defense issues.
