Tornadoes Sock Northeast Texas; 1 Killed, 60 Hurt : Storms: Wylie, just east of Dallas, is the hardest hit. Damage forces community hospital to shut down. Downpours bring more flash flooding.

Tornadoes skipped through the Dallas area on Sunday, striking and shutting down a hospital, destroying homes and killing at least one person. At least 60 others were injured.

Tornadoes touched down in Wylie, Sachse, Terrell, Forney and Lake Lavon in northeast Texas, the National Weather Service said.

Hardest hit was Wylie, 25 miles northeast of Dallas, where the tornado cut through the town’s business center and hit Physicians Regional Hospital.

One person was found dead at a mobile home park, said City Manager Steve Norwood. He said he had no further details.

The hospital treated at least 30 people who were slightly injured in the tornado before shutting down because of damage, said hospital chief executive Larry Wedekind.

None of the hospital’s 19 patients were injured in the storm, and they were being moved to other facilities, said spokeswoman Kathie Sukkar.

Other hospitals near Wylie said 29 people sought treatment, many for cuts caused by flying debris. Wylie has about 8,600 residents.

One person had a broken leg and one person had a head injury, said Sarah Thomas, spokeswoman for HCA Medical Center of Plano, which treated a dozen people.

Three people admitted to Baylor Medical Center in Garland were in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

None of the injuries were life-threatening, hospital officials said.

Sarah Nicholson of Wylie said she sought shelter in a McDonald’s restaurant after the storm blew out the windows of her van. She said the McDonald’s lost power and a window, and a nearby Subway sandwich shop was destroyed.

“The Subway is totally gone. It’s on top of the bank,” Nicholson said.

Jerry Johns of the Southwestern Insurance Information Service, said damage totals would reach into the tens of millions of dollars, if not more.

Electricity to about 8,000 homes was knocked out in the storm area, said Patsy Miller of TU Electric. Gas was shut off to the area because some lines were broken, Lone Star Gas spokesman Bob Jett said.

Bill Kunstmann said he went home after the twister to find his dogs safe, his possessions ruined and his roof gone. He said he walked past his house as he was returning home.

“It was a lot shorter than I remembered it,” Kunstmann said.

Sachse police said 15 to 20 homes were damaged, but no injuries were reported.

A tornado at Lake Lavon, just northeast of Wylie, damaged more than three dozen boats and slightly injured two people, said sheriff’s Sgt. John Norton.

Thunderstorms persisted over the Plains, causing flash floods in Texas and Oklahoma, where at least 300 families were forced to evacuate.

Oklahoma Gov. David Walters declared a statewide emergency.

High water hindered the search for two children and an adult missing after two cars were washed off the road in a flash flood Saturday in Oklahoma City, where more than seven inches of rain fell, mostly within three hours.

The flooding continued Sunday, causing 250 home evacuations in Kingfisher, 50 in Guthrie and 40 in Skiatook, in central Oklahoma.
