U.N. Sanctions Stall U.N. Convoys
Fuel is running out for U.N. convoys in what remains of Yugoslavia because 87 trucks with humanitarian supplies are held up on Hungary’s borders under tough new Security Council sanctions, an official said Tuesday.
Under the tightened measures against Serbia and Montenegro for backing Bosnia’s rebel Serbs, the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees must ask the U.N. sanctions committee in New York for a waiver for each humanitarian transport, office spokesman Ron Redmond told reporters.
Previous U.N. sanctions against the rump Yugoslavia for its role in the Bosnia-Herzegovina war included a blanket exemption for humanitarian aid.
The U.N. refugee agency is appealing to the sanctions committee to speed up its procedure, Redmond said. He did not say how long the trucks have been held up.
