Ferguson Misdirects Blame for Education Woes

Share

* Newport Beach Assemblyman Gil Ferguson’s statements in his Column Right/ O.C. Voices, “Charter Schools Making History but Not in O.C.” (May 6) are proof that Assemblyman Ferguson has perhaps been on the beach too long.

In a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black, this state legislator accuses Orange County school boards of making education suffer by not circumventing “a 6,000-page (state) Education Code to flee the bureaucratic policies that have stifled learning.”

While school boards throughout the state lobby in Sacramento to have this Education Code nightmare straightened out at the state level, what solutions does this assemblyman suggest? Hiring aerospace engineers instead of certified teachers?! Oh, please! “Kindergarten Cop” was a cute movie but a far cry from the reality of our children’s education needs.

I am looking forward to the response of Assemblyman Ferguson’s neighbors when he offers his garage space for an apprentice program in auto mechanics. Is he also encouraging local violation of health, safety and zoning codes in the name of education? Someone take this man out of the sun and send him back to Sacramento with a note pinned on him requesting that he be retrained to do what he was elected to do. I don’t think that includes endorsing education anarchy.
