Deputies Halt Inmates’ Brawl

Share

About 100 African-American and Latino inmates at Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail fought for about 10 minutes Saturday before two squads of deputies broke up the brawl.

Ten inmates suffered minor injuries and were being treated at the jail clinic, Sheriff’s Deputy David Peltz said.

The disturbance broke out about 4:20 p.m. as the inmates were being lead down a hallway for dinner, Peltz said. Officials have not determined what caused the fight.

About 30 deputies quelled the disturbance “with their presence alone. No weapons were used,” Peltz said.

The inmates involved in the fight were transferred to other parts of the jail.

Visitations were canceled and all 6,200 inmates were ordered to their cells. Visitations will resume today.
