Court Upholds Term Limits for Redondo Council

A state appeals court has upheld a lower court ruling that rejected former Redondo Beach City Councilman Ron Cawdrey’s challenge of a city law limiting council members to two terms in office.

The May 12 ruling by the state Court of Appeal came just a few days after Cawdrey lost his bid for mayor to incumbent Brad Parton in a runoff election.

In an interview Friday, Cawdrey said he was disappointed, but not surprised by the ruling. He said it is unlikely that he will pursue the matter to the Supreme Court because “I already know their feelings.”

“When you force good people out of office, the best people are not going to run for those jobs,” Cawdrey said. “So you wind up with a second-class group of people as our elected representatives.”
