A WINNING OSCAR

Share

Time and again, criticism is leveled at the conservative Cuban-American community in Miami (“Cuban Riffs & Songs of Love,” by Lydia Chavez, April 18). If I had gone through their experiences, I would probably share their views.

I was in Miami during the showing of “Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love,” and the whole audience was dancing with the actors. No one knew or questioned Oscar Hijuelos’ political views.

There’s no dishonor in changing political views. Staying a liberal or a conservative all life long could be indicative of stubbornness. Long ago, in a Cuban school, I noticed a framed saying, attributed to Benjamin Disraeli: “I am a conservative to conserve what is good and a liberal to destroy what is bad.”
