* Pat Burke; Managing Editor of Gay Activist Publication

Pat Burke, 46, managing editor of the gay activist publication Update. Born Patrick Raymond Burkett in Connellsville, Pa., Burke grew up in Los Angeles and attended USC and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UCLA. He served in the Navy in Vietnam and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, among others. On Thursday in San Diego of AIDS.

* George Corey; Foreign Correspondent and Screenwriter

George Corey, 90, foreign correspondent and screenwriter. An adventurer, Corey sailed to China in the 1920s to teach dentistry. When the Communist revolution occurred, he began covering it for the New York Times. On Thursday in Los Angeles of heart failure.

* John Hessler; Disabled Activist, State Health Official

John Hessler, 52, disabled activist who helped create the Center for Independent Living. Paralyzed from the neck down in a swimming accident in 1957, the wheelchair-bound Hessler helped develop the Physically Disabled Students Program while a student at UC Berkeley. On May 10 in Sacramento of heart failure.

* Dorothy Roberts; Canadian-Born Poet

Dorothy Roberts, 86, Canadian-born poet whose last book was “In the Flight of Stars,” published in 1991. Her books, popular in the United States as well as Canada, included “Songs for Swift Feet,” “In Star and Stalk,” “Twice in Flame” and “The Self of Loss.” On April 23 in State College, Pa.

* Joaquin Garcia Vargas; Pioneer Comic Actor in Mexican Films

Joaquin Garcia Vargas, 71, pioneer comic actor who appeared as Borolas in a series of Mexican movies. He was honored in 1991 by Mexico’s National Assn. of Actors for his five decades of acting. On Thursday in Mexico City of a heart attack.
