Shelter Renovation: The BIA’s program to assist the homeless, HomeAid, has selected an Anaheim shelter for the mentally disabled homeless as its latest project.

The $40,000 renovation, which should be completed by September, will add three bedrooms to the three that exist at the shelter owned by HOMES (Helping Our Mentally Ill Experience Success).

Shelter residents will be encouraged to live as independently as possible. All housework, cooking and shopping will be the residents’ responsibility, and they will be required to commit 20 hours each week to volunteer activities or looking for employment.

The shelter is the 17th renovated by HomeAid. Since the program started in 1989, HomeAid has increased the number of beds available to the homeless in Orange County by more than 300, a 25% increase.
