CALABASAS : Board OKs Funds for Storm Drain

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved $1.9 million for a massive storm drain on a stretch of road in Calabasas and Los Angeles and the resurfacing of 2.3 miles of streets in Agoura Hills and nearby unincorporated areas.

Nearly $1.7 million was approved for two 11-foot-wide, 8-foot-deep storm drains on about 1,000 feet of Calabasas Road between El Canon Avenue and Calabasas Creek. On parts of the road, which is bisected by the Ventura Freeway, floodwaters rose to about four feet last winter.

Los Angeles County Public Works Department spokeswoman Donna Guyovich said the work had already been planned, but was “given a higher priority” after this year’s floods.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin later this month and continue for about 120 days, during which some lanes may be closed, Guyovich said. About 35 small eucalyptus trees removed to build the new drain will not be replaced, she said.

A $200,000 bid to repave 2.3 miles of Cornell Road between Mulholland Highway on unincorporated county land to the south and Kanan Road in Agoura Hills to the north also was approved Tuesday. The city of Agoura Hills will help fund the project, which includes improved drainage systems and guard rails.

Parts of Cornell will be closed while crews work on the road, but will be reopened at night, Guyovich said. The project is scheduled to begin in July and end within four weeks, she said.
