LOS ALAMITOS : Council to Consider Trash Bin Proposal

To further encourage recycling, Briggeman Disposal, the city’s trash hauler, is offering to pick up trash in a smaller container and at a lower price than the current rates.

During a public hearing Monday, the City Council will consider Briggeman Disposal’s offer to provide residents with a 35-gallon trash bin at a cost of $9.95 monthly.

Assistant City Manager Gerard Goedhart said the container, which is about the size of a standard garbage can, would be provided at no cost.

“This is to encourage residents to recycle and dispose of less refuse for the landfills,” Goedhart said.

Residents use either a 100-gallon container, which costs $12.56 monthly, or a 60-gallon can that costs $11.31 per month, Goedhart said. He said that of the city’s 1,940 single-family households, 110 use the 60-gallon container.

Starting next month, residents may drop off green waste or yard clippings at Briggeman Disposal’s facility in Los Alamitos from 7 to 11 a.m. every second Saturday of each month, according to George S. Briggeman Jr., the company’s chief executive officer.

Briggeman said the program is free and will be in operation until the city develops a curbside green-waste program.
