Maj. Gen. John Frost, whose heroic role in the Allied defeat at Arnhem during World War II inspired the movie “A Briadge Too Far,” died Friday. He was 80.

Frost was portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins in the 1977 movie, which was largely faithful to the events of the defeat.

Born in India on Dec. 31, 1912, Frost was a professional soldier who played a key role in building up British paratroops after 1941. He commanded paratroopers in France, North Africa and Sicily before being called home for the Arnhem operation.

The people of Arnhem renamed the bridge after Frost in 1977.

He is survived by his wife, a son and daughter.
