Grant Waite shot a four-under-par 67 at the Kemper Open to put himself in an unprecedented position Friday--on top of the leader board after the second round of a PGA tournament.

Waite’s nine-under 133 total at the halfway point at Potomac, Md., gave him a two-shot lead over Tom Kite, who had six birdies en route to a 65. Kite made the cut for the first time in four tournaments since a back injury in March.

“It was a pleasing day on the greens,” Kite said. “I haven’t been able to work as hard as I would have liked. I had no idea what to expect.”

Kite took five weeks off because of two herniated disks before returning last week for the Byron Nelson Classic, where he lasted only two rounds.

Rocky Thompson made six birdies during a round of five-under-par 65 for a two-stroke lead after one round of the Bell Atlantic Classic at Malvern, Pa.

Bob Charles shot a 67. Defending champion Lee Trevino and Jim Colbert were at 68.

Brandie Burton shot a four-under 68 to take the lead after the opening round of the $400,000 Lady Keystone Open at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa.

Burton is one stroke ahead of Julie Larsen, Tina Barrett and Jennifer Myers, and two ahead of Betsy King and Val Skinner.
