Diane Armstrong, a 20-year resident of Palos Verdes Estates, received the outstanding laywoman of the year award from the South Coast Ecumenical Council at its 40th annual assembly, held at Grant AME Church in Long Beach. The council is a coalition of 125 churches in the Los Angeles area. Armstrong is a member of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills Estates and is active in numerous church and community affairs.

Shirley P. Thorrens of Redondo Beach is one of 21 community leaders who received honors from the United Jewish Fund for extraordinary commitment to community service. Thorrens has been a volunteer with the Southern Region Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, the UJF Southern Region Women’s Division and is Southern Region Women’s Conference president. She has served on numerous other committees and organizations and is an active member of Congregation Ner Tamid in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Palos Verdes resident Joseph T. Faulkner has been elected president of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, Greater Los Angeles/Southern California Chapter. A veteran of more than 20 years in Los Angeles commercial real estate, Faulkner founded the Faulkner Co. He recently announced the closure of his firm and his impending association with CB Commercial Real Estate Group in downtown Los Angeles as senior vice president.
