CAMARILLO : Donations Requested for Veterans’ Memorial

Share

A Camarillo veterans group is seeking donations from local businesses, residents and community groups for a planned veterans’ memorial in Constitution Park.

Daryl Johnson, president of the Camarillo Veterans’ Memorial Committee, said the group has raised about $500 of the $12,000 needed to build the memorial in the park at Paseo Camarillo and Carmen Drive.

“We don’t anticipate a great deal of trouble with a city of 50,000 people raising this amount of money,” he said. “We’re hoping, anyway.”

The group plans to erect a 6-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide marble monument bearing the inscription: “To the men and women veterans of Camarillo, when your country called you answered. A grateful city remembers,” said Samuel Walker, a retired Marine Corps officer who designed the project.

For dramatic effect, the monument will be built on a 6- to 8-inch pedestal and will be lighted at night, Walker said.

A U.S. flag and black-and-white POW/MIA flag will be mounted behind the monument, he said.

The group hopes to dedicate the memorial this year on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. To make donations or get further information, call Roy Nichols, committee treasurer, at 482-0860 or write Camarillo Veterans’ Memorial Committee, P.O. Box 248, Camarillo 93011.
