World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Arrests Create Crisis for Democracy Talks

Police arrested at least 49 members of the radical Pan Africanist Congress and its guerrilla wing, plunging South Africa’s democracy talks into a new crisis. Law and Order Minister Hernus Kriel told Parliament that those arrested were being held for murder, attempted murder and firebomb attacks on police stations, among other charges. The African National Congress accused the government of a deliberate attempt to derail democracy talks.
