From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Three members of a radical polygamous sect were sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting four people who abandoned the group. William Heber LeBaron, 29, Patricia LeBaron, 27, and Douglas Lee Barlow, 32, were convicted in January on nine federal charges in the July 27, 1988, slayings in Houston and suburban Dallas. Prosecutors said the case marked the first convictions under a federal statute that makes it illegal for a person to interfere with another’s religious beliefs.
