‘Schindler’ II

Share

In his eagerness to state the case for bygones being bygones, Don Wardell makes an insensitive, invalid comparison in his letter of last Sunday regarding the Holocaust and “Schindler’s List.”

When he (and I) were nightly bombed in London in 1940, we had a Royal Air Force, a radar system, antiaircraft batteries, an Auxiliary Fire Service, an Air Raid Precautions Organisation. These certainly helped us to “get over it” even at the time, never mind now, so many years later.

No comparable defenses were available to Jews and others corralled by the Nazis and herded into death camps. Further: The entire world knew of London’s resistance and courage; the mass murders were mostly carried out in secure secrecy.

Bottom line? The Nazis’ camp victims were entirely defenseless and abandoned. Most “got over it” by dying. Others may be forgiven for not being over it yet and, like some of whom were luckier, unwilling to forget.
