MANAGUA : OAS Assembles

Share

Foreign ministers of 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries will meet in the Nicaraguan capital beginning next Monday for the annual general assembly of the Organization of American States.

The discussions are likely to be dominated by the crisis in nearby Guatemala, where President Jorge Serrano suspended the constitution and dissolved Congress and the Supreme Court. Guatemala will also be the subject of an emergency OAS meeting of foreign ministers Thursday in Washington, where it is expected Serrano will be roundly condemned.

The weeklong assembly comes as the OAS attempts to raise its profile as an effective organization that can solve problems and strengthen democracy in the region.
